They're totally different. Regular light microscopes are used for basic purposes, nothing too complex. They usually magnify objects 10x-100x. Electron microscopes bounce electrons off the object so it kind of creates a topographic map of the thing you're looking at. Good electron microscopes can give you 1,000,000x magnification. You see objects and color better with light microscopes but when you have to look at extremely small objects, electron microscopes are the bomb.
